Renewing a green card: What you should know

Posted on January 01, 2021 in green cards

If you are a green card holder, you have permanent residence in the United States. Not only does your card enable you to work in the country, it is proof that you have completed the process and can live in the U.S. without worry.

It is important to understand the renewal process, as well as the requirements for obtaining and maintaining your green card.

When is it time to renew your card?

Depending on the type of green card you have, you must renew your permanent resident card periodically. While most cards are valid for 10 years, those with conditional permanent resident status must be renewed every two years.

You should initiate the renewal process if your card will expire in six month or is already expired. If you have a conditional green card, you should look into removing the conditions of the card 90 days before it expires.

What is the renewal process?

To start the renewal process, you must fill out and file Form I-90, which is an Application to Replace Permanent Residence Card. You can download the form and fill it out online or print the forms and send them by mail.

While your form and application for renewal is being processed, you can use the Form I-90 receipt along with your expired or expiring green card to prove you are still legally able to live and work in the country.

Letting your green card expire may cause problems with the following:

  • Getting a new job
  • Reentering the United States while traveling
  • Obtaining or renewing a professional license
  • Obtaining or renewing a driver’s license
  • Buying a house

The entire renewal process may take anywhere from 8 to 10 months depending on the circumstances.
